PLEASE NOTE
February 2009
As is the case with so many foundations, the value of our endowment has declined in the current economic downturn. Our Trustees are committed to maintaining grantmaking at $12 million in 2009, approximately the same level as in 2008. This $12 million includes $3.3 million already committed in multi-year pledges. Difficult choices will have to be made about what to fund in 2009, and we are giving priority consideration to current grantees seeking renewed funding. Unfortunately, this means that there is very little money left for new projects or organizations for 2009 and, we project, for 2010 as well.
That being said, we strongly believe that this economic situation will turn around and that we must be open to preparing for the future. If, after reading our guidelines and reviewing our grant lists carefully, you believe that your work is directly and measurably in line with the results we are seeking, we want to know about what you are doing. While it is highly unlikely that we will be able to fund your work at this time, we will at least know who you are when times get better. A simple letter introducing your work will suffice at this point. This does not apply to current Altman grantees, who should prepare full applications using the forms on this website as planned.
Thank you for all you do.
