The Bronx River Alliance, Inc.

The Bronx River Alliance, Inc. (BxRA) aims to restore the Bronx River corridor, create a continuous park along its length (the Greenway), reconnect residents to the River, and, by extension, help revitalize nearby Bronx neighborhoods. Working with an array of partners, the Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for protecting, improving, and restoring the Bronx River corridor and for promoting its ecological, recreational, educational and economic resources.

Results

  • BxRA facilitates and monitors capital projects that have attracted more than $140 million in city, state, and federal funds to the waterfront; and it has marshaled more than 83,000 volunteer hours and planted more than 8,500 new trees;
  • Recent Greenway results include: the completion of two park projects and the groundbreaking of three others, and securing more than $3.4 million in capital funds over the past two years for park and entryway improvements, storm water management, signage, and riverside dock repairs; and
  • A range of events, organized in partnership with complementary groups including Transportation Alternatives, Bike New York, and the City Parks Foundation, that have increased water-based recreation and use of the River's shorefront open spaces.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead: Following a national competition, the Bronx River watershed was selected in June 2011 as one of seven sites for the Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP), a unique pilot project involving eleven federal agencies, that will seek to stimulate regional and local economies, create local jobs, improve quality of life, and protect Americans’ health by revitalizing urban waterways in under-served communities.
