Harlem Academy

Harlem Academy was founded in 2004 with the goal of being “an elementary and middle school in Harlem that matches the standards of any independent school in New York City”. The school serves academically promising low-income students and features small class sizes, an extended day, long academic blocks, experiential learning, a focus on personal development, and strong partnerships with families.

Results

  • Average attendance rate per day of 96%.
  • 100% of families attend parent conferences and fulfill volunteer roles each month.
  • 94% of students scored above the national median in English in 2010, and 90% scored above the national median in math on Educational Records Bureau (ERB) assessments; and 2.5 times more students scored in the top quartile than in schools nationwide.

Looking Ahead

Harlem Academy will introduce its inaugural eighth-grade program in the fall of 2011 and will send its first graduating class on to secondary school in 2012.
