The Altman Foundation is pleased to announce that Megan McAllister and Rachael N. Pine, J.D., have been appointed senior program officers of the Foundation. Ms. McAllister, who joined the Foundation in 2008 as a program officer, is now Senior Program Officer, Education, and Ms. Pine, who joined the Foundation in 2011, also as a program officer, is now Senior Program Officer, Health. Vice President and Executive Director Karen Rosa noted, “These promotions reflect the expertise and breadth of vision these exceptional professionals bring to their work both here at the Altman Foundation and beyond our walls. Megan McAllister and Rachael Pine are thoughtful, intelligent, and dedicated grantmakers and we are proud to be able to recognize them in this way.”
Ms. McAllister oversees a portfolio of grants in education and youth development, with a particular focus on early childhood education, expanded learning/summer learning, and college access and success. In addition, she has led the implementation of an outcome-based grantmaking strategy and performance management system for the Foundation, including leading staff reflection and goal-setting and developing annual presentations on the grant portfolio’s performance for the Foundation’s Trustees. Externally, Ms. McAllister has been a proactive contributor to a number of public/private partnerships and collaborative funding initiatives including, in recent years, as a member of the New York City Department of Education’s Summer Learning Task Force and the Deputy Mayor’s NYC Early Care and Education Task Force; as Vice-chair of the Child Care and Early Education Fund; and as a member of the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund, the College Completion Innovation Fund, and the NYC Early Childhood Working Group. Prior to joining the Altman Foundation, Ms. McAllister was a program officer at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation in Atlanta, GA; co-founded and served as board president for a nonprofit professional Shakespeare festival for southern Connecticut; and had a thirteen-year career as a journalist and producer in commercial and public television, winning awards for her work covering social welfare issues at ABC News, and collaborating on programs for the Discovery Channel, the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, and others. Ms. McAllister is a graduate of Hamilton College and holds a Master in Public Policy from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University.
Ms. Pine has principal responsibility for the Altman Foundation’s portfolio in health, health services, and health policy, and for the Foundation’s work at the intersections of health and aging, health and immigrants, and health and community-based human services. Immediately after joining Altman, Ms. Pine led an internal strategic process designed to revise and refocus the Foundation’s grantmaking priorities in health, in the midst of a complex and fast-moving period in the health care and health policy field. An active funding and thought partner with both public and private colleagues, Ms. Pine conceived and ran two timely convenings focusing multi-sector attention on undocumented immigrants, one of the most important NYC populations left behind by the insurance coverage advances in the Affordable Care Act; has served as a moderator and/or organizer for numerous panels at national Grantmakers in Health and Grantmakers in Aging conferences; and was recently invited to be Vice Chair of the Philanthropy New York Health Working Group. Prior to joining the Altman Foundation, Ms. Pine held senior positions in the public and nonprofit sector, including as Vice President for Public Affairs at EngenderHealth and as Executive Director of the Fund for Public Health in New York. Ms. Pine is a graduate of Wesleyan University and holds a J. D. from the New York University School of Law.
