Strengthening Communities

The Foundation has an historic interest in ensuring that individuals and families living in the city have access to the services and resources they need to pursue and sustain successful lives. The Foundation invests in organizations, programs, and projects that achieve results aligned with the objectives outlined below. Please note that the "Results Sought" reflect the specific outcomes of interest to us.

Promote and sustain the availability of, and equitable access to, essential community resources needed to support stable, healthy communities, with an emphasis on systemic efforts.

  1. Preserve and/or increase the quality and amount of affordable housing
  2. Preserve and/or increase the quality and availability of well-maintained parks and open spaces, and other essential community resources

City Parks Foundation, Inc.
$120,000 (over two years)
To support the Partnerships for Parks suite of programs to strengthen park stewardship across New York City

Council on the Environment, Inc. dba GrowNYC
To help support their work on behalf of community gardens and green spaces

Enterprise Community Partners, Inc.
$100,000 (over eighteen months)
To build capacity of residents and community-based organizations to engage and provide input in public housing preservation in New York, and to evaluate the early phases of the preservation process through the Rental Assistance Demonstration program

Friends of Van Cortlandt Park
$40,000 (over fifteen months)
To support the creation of the Van Cortlandt Park Stewardship Organization to guide the future of the park, support implementation of the 2034 Master Plan, and ensure adequate resources are raised and dedicated to the Park’s operation and maintenance

The Horticultural Society of New York, Inc.
To help support the Neighborhood Plaza Partnership program's assistance to community-based organizations managing public plazas on behalf of the City of New York

Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City, Inc.
$150,000 (over two years)
To enhance NHSNYC's capacity to preserve limited-equity housing cooperatives as a source of affordable homeownership opportunity for low-income families throughout New York City

Neighborhoods First Fund for Community Planning
To help support Neighborhoods First Fund for Community Planning, a donor collaborative sponsored by the New York Foundation to improve community-based planning capacity in neighborhoods that are likely to be considered for rezoning and other development initiatives

New Yorkers for Parks
$120,000 (over two years)
To support Planning for Open Space Equity, an applied research initiative to develop and vet open space metrics, apply them to community planning efforts, and shape policy

Prospect Park Alliance, Inc.
$100,000 (over two years)
To help underwrite a community engagement project designed to solicit stakeholder input for the rehabilitation of Prospect Park’s Rose Garden, as part of the next phase of Prospect Park Alliance’s strategic planning process

Riders Alliance
$60,000 (over fourteen months)
To build additional capacity within the Riders Alliance for disseminating the findings of recent studies of the economic impact of transit delays on New York City and for advocating for better subway and bus service and a stronger public investment in mass transit
